One of the more interesting archaeological sites of the Sicilian hinterland are
surely the ancient Greek city of Morgantina. The numerous sources in which Morgantina
is mentioned are one it retries of her importance. To the information of the literary
sources the finds are added obviously recovered following the archaeological excavations
effected in the whole area. The city extends him on a small lowland delimited
by sweets hills. To the center of the plain the Agorà is found dominated
by the tall one by the" hill of the Citadel", center of the Acropolis.
The site, before being colonized by the Greek, introduced prehistoric installations
of age castelluciana and the age of the Bronze. It was in the IX century
a.C. than the Morgetis arrived (from which Morgantina takes the name). Testimonies
of the period of colonization from this people are found in the area of the Acropolis:
huts to square plant belonging to an agricultural village. In the IV century a.C.
the farmers Calcidesi of Catania magnify the site. In the 211 a.C.
, during the wars betwin Carthago and Rome, Morgantina lines up him with the Carthaginian
ones and this provokes her destruction from the Romans.
Certainly, thanks to discovery of Morgantina, we have wrote again the history
of ancient Sicily, because our Sicilian Pompei has given us the
possibility to study the urbanistic arrangement of its Agorà. It is subvided
into two levels, and with its trapezium stairway shaped (Ekklesiasterion), is
the only example of Greek-Sicilian Polis in the whole Magna Grecia
(Great Greece).
It is also important to visit the Greek Theatre, perfect in its dimensions,
with 1200 seatses, in which the famous Greek tragedies an comedies of Eschilo,
Sofocle, Euripide, Aristofane, Menandro and Plauto are represented.
